USCG Captain Mac Daniel,
is a 3rd generation native of Amelia Island,
Florida, an accomplished Flounder Gigger. He has
gigged flounders up to 19.3 lbs!
Mac 's love for flounder
gigging started at a young age. With money he
had made from mowing yards and advice from his
Grandfather, he bought his first boat, a 6hp
Johnson outboard, from Herb White's Marine in
downtown Fernandina Beach. Later, he bought 10'
Jon boat from Sears & Roebuck.
Young Mac would pole along
the edge of the Amelia River during the evening.
He became quite adapt from an early age of
spotting flounder with his home-made light set
up on the Jon boat. At the age of 11 he gigged
his first flounder.
Mac so loved the sport
that he would flounder gig several nights a
week, setting the alarm for the early morning.
The real excitement of that each Flounder Gig
trip offered a new adventure and will each trip
different sights -- from colorful sunsets, to
star-filled skies and to marine life in their
Mac experimented with
traditional ways of flounder gigging, while
thinking of new innovate ways of finding the
fish. After many hours on the water he observed
the different habits of the fish -- he soon
discovered gigging was directly related to the
rise and fall of the moon, the phase of the moon
and particular readings of the barometer.
His love for flounder gigging
grew over the years. In 2001, he drew up the
plans for a 24' Aluminum boat with twelve (12)
500 watt Halogen lights and an Air Fan motor to
be able to go at either tide and in gusty
